Background of the study
Education is widely recognized as a vital tool for socio-economic development, and libraries play an essential supporting role in this endeavor by providing students with access to educational resources and learning support. In Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State, the issue of school drop-out remains a concern, driven by factors such as poverty, lack of motivation, and limited access to academic support materials. Libraries, both public and school-based, have taken initiatives to mitigate these issues by offering reading programs, homework assistance, and access to essential learning materials (Boma & Obele, 2024). In areas where schools struggle to provide up-to-date textbooks and learning aids, libraries act as supplementary educational centers, offering free access to information and a conducive environment for study. Furthermore, library-led interventions such as reading clubs, academic mentorship, and ICT training have been instrumental in keeping at-risk students engaged with the learning process. Studies suggest that when students have consistent access to academic support outside the classroom, they are more likely to remain in school and perform better academically (Agana & Okechukwu, 2023). However, the extent to which library services have contributed to reducing drop-out rates in Okrika remains underexplored. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of library services in addressing the root causes of school drop-out and enhancing student retention in the area.
Statement of the problem
Despite ongoing efforts to improve educational outcomes, school drop-out rates in Okrika remain relatively high. While libraries have introduced support services aimed at improving student engagement and performance, there is little empirical evidence on the actual impact of these interventions. Without such data, it is difficult to scale or optimize these services for broader impact (Okpara & Nte, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To identify the types of library services provided to support students in Okrika.
To assess how library services influence student motivation and academic engagement.
To evaluate the impact of library services on reducing school drop-out rates.
Research questions
What kinds of academic support services do libraries offer to students in Okrika?
How do students perceive the influence of these services on their academic progress?
What is the measurable impact of these services on drop-out rates?
Significance of the study
This study will provide insights into how library services can be harnessed to improve student retention and academic performance. It will benefit educational stakeholders by highlighting effective strategies to reduce drop-outs through enhanced library interventions.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to library services and their impact on school drop-out rates in Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State.
